Particular qualifications:
Familiarity with complexity of IUCN based on previous experience as a Regional Councillor and active roles in the Commissions. Played an active role in the World Conservation Congress 2021 in Marseille as the Co-Chair of the Congress Governance Committee. Deep knowledge and vast experience plus wide network in South and East Asia in relation to nature conservation to effectively play an ambassadorial role for IUCN in the region. Up to date in terms of the priorities and IUCN Programme and able to cascade this to the regional and local levels.
Experience in fields of concern to IUCN:
Co-Chair of the Congress Governance Committee during the World Conservation Congress in Marseille, France in 2021. Instrumental in getting the game-changing Council Motion on Sub-National Government category approved through high level negotiations. Vice Chair of the Programme and Policy Committee of the Council that provided guidance and oversight for corresponding policy and programme-related matters including the IUCN Nature 2030 Programme. Providing leadership in interpreting IUCN WCPA programmes especially in relation to protected and conserved areas management e.g. the Green List, OECMs and Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Played a key role in the initial negotiations with Sabah Parks to co-organise the 2nd Asia Parks Congress in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, as well as the planning and successful delivery of the event. An active founding member of the Asia Protected Areas Partnership since its official launch at the World Parks Congress in 2014.
