This forum session is proposed jointly by the Marine Invertebrate Red List Authority (IUCN SSC) and the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative, together with their network of members and partners. We aim to build capacity for conservation assessment in the deep sea.Scenario: A newly described deep-sea species found in deep waters is already a popular seafood dish in the region. Participants will be asked to assess the potential extinction risk for this case study species in the context of the IUCN Red List categories and criteria, and determine appropriate conservation actions.
Interactive Elements: After a general introduction by the session leaders, small groups will analyse data (e.g., population size, habitat specificity, threats) using the IUCN Red List criteria. They will then share findings and compare their assessment with an expert evaluation.
