Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) hold great potential for Africa by recognizing conservation beyond protected areas. They empower communities, safeguard biodiversity, and integrate sustainable livelihoods. By linking people, nature, and economies, OECMs provide scalable solutions for climate resilience, development, and biodiversity while honoring Africa’s diverse stewardship traditions.

Descripción de la sesión

This session will highlight Africa’s leadership in advancing Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs). It will showcase national dialogues, policy framework development, and inspiring site-level case studies that demonstrate how OECMs are being identified and implemented across the continent. What stands out is the collaborative approach uniting governments, NGOs, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities in shaping this inclusive conservation model. By bringing diverse voices to the table, OECMs are unlocking opportunities to safeguard biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and support sustainable livelihoods beyond traditional protected areas. The session will feature speakers representing NGO partners, site managers, community leaders, Indigenous representatives, and government agencies, who will share experiences, lessons, and visions for scaling OECMs. Participants will gain insights into Africa’s emerging conservation landscape and how OECMs are becoming a vital tool for achieving the Global Biodiversity Framework targets while honoring cultural traditions and community-led stewardship.
