Doctorate degree in wildlife spatial ecology obtained from the Department of Forest Resources Conservation, Bogor Agricultural University. Professional career began when he was a researcher at the Ecological Project of Wildlife Conservation International (currently WCS) in the Gunung Leuser National Park, northern Sumatra, in the period of 1992-1994. Then, for three years he joined the team of Integrated Conservation and Development Programme (ICDP), a programme funded by the European Union in the preparation of a master plan for the management of the Leuser Ecosystem. Between 1997 and 2004 he held various technical positions in the Leuser Management Unit, an implementing body of cooperation programmme between the Government of Indonesian and European Union in the Leuser Ecosystem area. In this period, together with other colleagues he established a conservation foundation. Then, he worked for the ZSL Indonesia Programme as a Country Manager for almost nine years, and also as a short term consultant (wildlife and biodiversity expert) for the Hatfield Group and Rainforest Alliance. Since 1991 he has been writing many scientific papers and guidelines on wildlife conservation and ecology. He was also a chairman of the Sumatran Tiger Conservation Forum and the Society for Conservation GIS. Currently, he still serves as a member of the Advisory Board at the Asian Journal of Conservation Biology and the Sumatran Tiger Conservation Forum. He used to as a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Tapir Specialist Group. Currently, he is working as a lecturer at Graduate Programme of Unvironment Management at Pakuan University in Bogor, while also working with a private sector as Department Head of Landscape Conservation.
