Kundan Burnwal is a Senior Advisor and Deputy Project Director for the Indo-German bilateral cooperation project RECAP4NDC, which aims to restore, conserve, and protect forest and tree cover for NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) implementation in India at GIZ India, recognized for his leadership and technical expertise in climate change mitigation, carbon markets, forestry, and project development in India. He has over 18 years of experience in climate change mitigation policy and sustainable development, with a deep focus on development, evaluation, and implementation of projects in forestry, climate change, carbon markets, MRV (Measurement, Reporting and Verification), and sustainability. He leads implementation of FLR initiatives and stakeholder coordination, fostering cross-sectoral collaboration among government, civil society, private sector, and academia. He has developed and authored the first internationally approved REDD+ methodology out of South Asia, and managed numerous CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) and voluntary carbon market projects. He authored “Air Pollution Abatement Through Trees and Subsequent Greenbelt Development” (2013), and contributed to several influential reports and roadmaps on carbon markets and climate action. He has a master’s degree in environmental management from Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun, India. Kundan Burnwal continues to be a driving force in India’s climate policy space, particularly in advancing forestry solutions, carbon markets, and collaborative climate action through GIZ India and Indo-German initiatives.
