From Call to Capture: Documenting the Owl Species of Wadi Wurayah.
Descripción de la sesión
This talk will showcase the unique biodiversity of Wadi Wurayah National Park, with a special focus on its seven owl species, including the recently discovered and elusive Omani Owl (Strix butleri). Globally listed by IUCN as Data Deficient and classified as Critically Endangered in the UAE, this species has become the subject of dedicated research since 2019. Guided by a wildlife monitoring specialist, a team of local youth volunteers has been conducting acoustic and camera trap surveys to document and better understand the owl’s ecology. Their efforts led to the first photographic records of the Omani Owl in the park in 2020. This presentation will highlight the progress of this ongoing research, the role of youth in conservation, and the broader efforts to identify and protect additional habitats for this rare species—contributing to national and global biodiversity conservation goals.Organised by
