Why attend

This session explores groundbreaking advancements in black-footed ferret recovery, from the first cloned endangered species to genomic tools, innovative disease management, and new monitoring technologies. Learn how science and conservation are securing the future of this once-thought-extinct, charismatic species through innovation and collaboration.

Session Description

This session explores the black-footed ferret’s journey from near extinction to an ambitious recovery program that has overcome significant challenges—yet still has a long way to go. Highlights include the recent addition of an eighth genetic founder through the successful reproduction of a cloned individual, along with cutting-edge genomic tools to combat disease and increase resiliency.
The program is also developing high-powered thermal imaging drones, AI, and advanced tracking devices to monitor and protect wild populations. GPS collars developed by the Smithsonian and Swansea University provide fine-scale “daily diary” data, offering unprecedented insights into underground burrow systems.
We’ll also showcase the latest grassroots fight against sylvatic plague, the species’ greatest threat, including a partnership with Colorado State University’s engineering lab, which developed a “triple shooter” to efficiently distribute plague-fighting baits.
Join us to discover how science, technology, and collaboration are shaping the future of black-footed ferret conservation.
