Por qué asistir

Genetic diversity is the foundation of life, vital for species’ survival and resilience. This session explores new IUCN Guidelines that help conservationists decide which species and populations to monitor for genetic diversity, why long-term monitoring matters, and how genetic data can guide stronger, evidence-based biodiversity conservation.

Descripción de la sesión

Genetic diversity enabled individuals, populations, and species to adapt and thrive in a changing world. Without it, ecosystems weaken, and extinction risks rise. Yet, despite its importance, genetic diversity is rarely monitored in a systematic way.

This session presents the new IUCN Guidelines on Selecting Species and Populations for Monitoring Genetic Diversity, designed to make this critical task more practical and effective. Participants will learn how to design a monitoring programme, identify which species or populations to track, and apply clear criteria to guide decisions. The Guidelines also emphasize the importance of repeated, long-term monitoring—providing essential evidence on how biodiversity is changing and whether conservation actions are working.

Join us to discover how monitoring genetic diversity can strengthen conservation outcomes and safeguard life on Earth.
