Pourquoi participer
Environmental Human Rights Defenders, including ocean defenders, face escalating violence and criminalization. Building on IUCN Resolution 115 and cross-Union work, this session—led by CEESP, WCPA, and WCEL—brings together Members, Commissions, partners, and defenders themselves to share approaches, practices, and lived experiences to strengthen protection and advance rights-based, inclusive conservation.
Description de la séance
Environmental Human Rights Defenders (EHRDs) safeguard biodiversity and human rights, yet they increasingly face threats, intimidation, and criminalization. IUCN Members responded through Resolution 115 in Marseille, committing the Union to greater protection of defenders, and advancing knowledge through a dedicated briefing and cross-Commission collaboration. This session, convened by CEESP, WCPA, and WCEL, will bring together IUCN Members, Commissions, partners, and defenders themselves—including ocean defenders—to exchange perspectives, experiences, and solutions. By combining legal, governance, and policy expertise with the lived realities of defenders on the frontlines, the session will highlight practices to strengthen protection, support resilience, and embed rights-based approaches across conservation. Participants will explore how IUCN can advance Resolution 115, mobilize collective action, and stand in solidarity with all defenders working to protect nature and communities worldwide.Organized by
