Why attend
Gender-based violence impedes the active participation of women to work towards conservation, which then prevents the conservation work itself from being as effective as it can be. Addressing gender-based violence in environmental contexts, including within the fisheries sector, strengthens communities and contributes to scaling up resilient, equitable conservation action.
Session Description
Around the globe, gender-based violence is present in all fisheries contexts. In this podcast, fishery leaders from Kenya and Zambia will share insights from their work implementing projects under IUCN’s Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Environments (RISE) grants challenge on meaningful ways they are addressing sex-for-fish practices and creating Marine Protected Areas that take women’s safety from gender-based violence into account across fisheries contexts. The podcast will feature RISE implementing lead organizations from ActionAid Zambia and The Global Trauma Project in Kenya– alongside perspectives from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and the United Kingdom Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), they will discuss why and how addressing gender-based violence is crucial for safeguarding inclusive and sustainable fisheries and conservation. Throughout, the live audience will engage in the event, sharing insights, questions and reflections through a virtual interactive platform.
