Funding justice … justly: Shifting power and practice in conservation philanthropy

12/10/2025
17:30 - 19:00
The Reimagine Conservation Pavilion
Session with interpretation

Why attend

Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how justice-oriented conservation funding can work in practice—alongside new relationships and ideas for action. This session aims to catalyze not just reflection, but a renewed commitment to doing philanthropy differently.

Session Description

This session will build on previous discussions about the current conservation moment by exploring where local communities and organisations are already stepping up to meet this moment, and the ways funders can support this.

Through facilitated discussions, reflective activities, and storytelling, we will explore examples of how philanthropy is (or isn’t) supporting rights-based and grassroots-led conservation practice, with an emphasis on real-life innovations and persistent barriers. We will then look ahead and collectively imagine what the future could and should look like for how justice-orientated and grassroots-led conservation is funded, and where philanthropy fits in.
