Why attend

Explore how legal and policy frameworks can support sustainable agriculture in addressing biodiversity loss, climate change, and food insecurity. Gain early insights from IUCN’s forthcoming publication and join a dialogue with legal and policy experts on aligning laws across sectors to build resilient, equitable, and nature-positive food systems.

Session Description

The transition toward sustainable agriculture is central to addressing the interconnected crises of biodiversity loss, climate change, and food insecurity. Yet current agricultural development models often overlook environmental and social impacts, limiting the effectiveness of policies and legal frameworks. This session introduces insights from a forthcoming IUCN report examining the enabling legal and policy conditions required to support sustainable agriculture from international to national levels. Drawing on comparative, multilevel analysis, the report identifies key areas for urgent reform—ranging from biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation to land use planning and farmer support. It reviews binding and non-binding international instruments, regional trade frameworks, and institutional guidance, offering actionable recommendations for aligning national frameworks with global goals and ensuring coherence across agricultural, environmental, trade, and food systems policies. Panelists will explore contradictions in existing policies and discuss practical recommendations for an integrated legal environment that supports both farmers and ecosystems.
