Why attend
Can agricultural landscapes count toward global conservation targets? This session explores how well-managed, biodiversity-friendly farmland could qualify as OECMs, complementing protected areas and contributing to the 30x30 goal. Join a timely dialogue on policy, governance, and real-world examples shaping the future of conservation in productive landscapes.
Session Description
This session explores the emerging potential for well-managed agricultural landscapes to be recognised as Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs). It examines how such landscapes, when delivering sustained biodiversity conservation outcomes, can complement protected areas, enhance ecosystem connectivity, and contribute to global targets such as 30x30 under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Through practical examples, early case studies, and discussion among conservation practitioners, land managers, and policy stakeholders, the event will highlight enabling conditions, governance considerations, and challenges specific to productive landscapes. The session will encourage the development of case studies and pilot initiatives that demonstrate how sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices can align with OECM criteria. It aims to bring together governments, IPLCs, private sector actors, and smallholder farmers to explore recognition pathways for OECMs in agricultural contexts.Speaker
