Why attend
Join us to discuss the integration of the IUCN and ICMBio Red Lists for birds, illustrating how harmonizing global and national assessments can promote more effective public policies and strategic resource allocation.
Session Description
The integration of the global assessment of species extinction risk, conducted by IUCN and its partners, with national assessments carried out in Brazil by ICMBio represents a crucial step for biodiversity conservation, yet faces significant challenges. Although both assessments follow similar methodologies, differences in data availability can lead to discrepancies in assigned risk categories, hindering direct comparisons and the efficient transfer of information. In this context, the event proposes a strategic discussion on the harmonization of these initiatives, with a particular—but not exclusive—focus on birds, assessed globally by IUCN/BirdLife and nationally by ICMBio/MMA. The objective is to engage experts from both processes in exploring how standardization, compatibility, and improved data flow can optimize resource allocation for conservation and support more effective public policies, essential for the protection of biodiversity at both national and global levels.
