Why attend

Join this high-level event to learn how the new Global Coalition to Halt the Extinction of Sharks and Rays can drive coordinated global action. Discover pathways to protect critical habitats, ensure sustainable trade, and strengthen cooperation — helping governments deliver on biodiversity commitments and secure ocean health for future generations.

Session Description

Shark and ray populations are declining at alarming rates, with more than one-third of species now threatened with extinction. Their loss would not only destabilize aquatic ecosystems but also undermine food security, economies, and the commitments governments have made under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 30x30 target. At the UN Ocean Conference in 2025, countries and partners launched the Global Coalition to Halt the Extinction of Sharks and Rays—a bold new effort to change this trajectory. This event will set out the Coalition’s priorities and provide governments with practical pathways to act: from safeguarding critical habitats and ensuring ecological connectivity, to ensuring trade is sustainable and legal, strengthening fisheries management, and building regional and global cooperation. Participants will learn how joining forces through the Coalition can help deliver national commitments while contributing to a powerful collective response to one of the ocean’s most urgent conservation crises.
