Why attend

Learn how IUCN WCPA’s Task Force is closing critical gaps in Protected and Conserved Area standards by integrating human–wildlife conflict and coexistence considerations. Gain insights from draft guidance, key recommendations, and practical solutions to strengthen governance, equity, and conservation outcomes aligned with global biodiversity goals.

Session Description

Human–wildlife conflict (HWC) threatens biodiversity, community wellbeing, and the credibility of Protected and Conserved Area (PCA) governance. Yet, global conservation standards, including the IUCN Green List, provide limited guidance on systematically addressing coexistence challenges. This session, led by the IUCN WCPA Task Force on Integrating HWC into PCA Standards, introduces draft recommendations and practical tools developed from an extensive review of existing frameworks and best practices.

Drawing on the IUCN SSC Guidelines on HWC, SAGE, CATS, WFEN, and other leading standards, we identify opportunities to strengthen governance, equity, and management outcomes by embedding conflict-sensitive approaches directly into certification and operational frameworks. Participants will gain insights into tested approaches, structured tools, and implementation pathways for improving PCA performance while supporting biodiversity and human needs. This session advances inclusive, effective, and resilient conservation that aligns with the global 30×30 targets.
