Session Description

This press conference will present the latest global update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, the authoritative source on species extinction risk. Experts will outline changes in species’ status, the threats and drivers behind them, and what these trends mean for global conservation. Highlighted assessments will include three species of Arctic seals, which have moved closer to extinction due to climate change; the comprehensive reassessment of all bird species, which are globally declining due to deforestation; and rebound of green turtles due to conservation action. By drawing on the most up-to-date scientific data, the Red List helps to set priorities and measure progress toward international biodiversity goals. Participants will gain timely insight into the state of global biodiversity and the crucial role of evidence-based science in guiding effective conservation action.
