Why attend

Discover the new Green Status Index of Species Recovery (GSI), an index that tracks progress toward global species recovery, allowing countries to monitor and measure the impact of their conservation efforts.

Session Description

The lack of a global indicator for species recovery currently hinders progress toward meeting global biodiversity goals. While existing tools like the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List Index (RLI) and the Living Planet Index (LPI) track species-level change, they don't specifically measure recovery. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework emphasizes species recovery, and the new IUCN Green Status of Species (GSS) is a global standard designed to address this gap. From this, the Green Status Index of Species Recovery (GSI) was developed to serve as a worldwide indicator. The GSI is designed to measure progress toward species recovery while accounting for the inherent uncertainties of conservation assessments. It can also be broken down by country, allowing each nation to track its specific contribution to species recovery within its borders. We will introduce this new index and explore how the methodology can be applied at the national level.
