Why attend

Join the authors of new IUCN guidelines on translocation to learn more about when and how to responsibly translocate animals, plants and fungi displaced by legal and illegal trade, habitat destruction, human-wildlife conflicts, catastrophic events, climate change, and capture and collection.

Session Description

Millions of organisms are displaced annually by legal and illegal trade, habitat destruction, human-wildlife conflicts, catastrophic events, climate change, and capture and collection. Many are irresponsibly translocated, posing significant health and welfare, disease, genetic, and behavioural risks to wild organisms, ecosystems, and humans, as well as risks to the health and welfare of released individuals. Displaced organisms are also a potential source of candidates for responsible releases to benefit species and ecosystem conservation. New IUCN Guidelines on responsible translocation of displaced organisms are now available to help determine whether displaced individuals are suitable candidates for responsible translocation, help identify suitable circumstances for responsible translocation, and plan and implement these translocations. These guidelines build on existing IUCN guidance for conservation translocations and management of confiscated organisms. Join the authors to talk about opportunities and challenges for responsible translocation of displaced organisms and how we can collaborate to implement the guidelines.
