Why attend

This event will motivate the audience to contribute to a national effort that could redefine conservation in India. The global release of the plan may spark collaborations with other groups, commissions, and donors, and guide countries interested in launching their own National Red List assessment.

Session Description

India, one of the world’s 17 mega-diverse countries, hosts nearly 8% of global species. This session will present national efforts under the National Red List Project (2025–2030) to assess 11,000 species by 2030, aligning with the IUCN Red List and supporting Targets 3, 4 and 6 of India’s Biodiversity Action Plan. It showcases partnerships between the Government of India and IUCN Member NGOs, integrating Indigenous knowledge, youth engagement, and scientific collaboration. A five-year Action Plan will be released, reflecting India’s intent to compile a National Red Data Book. The session highlights how assessments guide planning, action, communication, and policy. It will offer IUCN Commissions, Specialist Groups, and Chairs an opportunity to engage and contribute. Contacts made will support future collaboration and help shape national conservation priorities.
