Discover how North America’s wildlife model and Montana’s land tools balance people and nature. These stories reveal practical pathways to conserve biodiversity while sustaining livelihoods.
Session Description
The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation is one of the world’s most successful approaches to wildlife management, rooted in science, public trust, democratic access, and sustainable use. “The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation: A Best Practice Example” explores how these principles have restored species, financed management, and kept people central to conservation for more than a century. It highlights successes in species recovery, food security, and public engagement, while examining how coupling rights to use wildlife with responsibilities to conserve creates incentives for governance, funding, and stewardship. “Working Lands, Living Landscapes: Montana’s Conservation Tools” illustrates how these principles are applied on the ground, showing how landscapes managed for both people and wildlife generate enduring conservation outcomes. Together, these talks consider how foundational ideas from North America might be adapted to diverse legal, cultural, and ecological contexts, offering practical lessons for building inclusive and resilient management systems worldwide.Organised by
