Why attend

This session showcases cutting-edge conservation technologies and youth-led research initiatives focused on the Swatch of No Ground MPA. Attendees will explore innovative solutions like satellite tagging, fish DNA barcoding, and local youth-driven conservation, while networking with experts, policymakers, and young professionals advancing marine biodiversity protection.

Session Description

The Swatch of No Ground (SoNG) Marine Protected Area (MPA) is a vital biodiversity hotspot, home to marine megafauna including cetaceans, sharks and rays, and marine turtles. However, there is a very little biodiversity data thus conservation actions remain hindered. This session will showcase innovative conservation technologies like satellite tagging for crocodiles and marine turtles, fish DNA barcoding, environmental data collection using updated technology, capacity building of government departments, while emphasizing youth engagement through student research support. This showcase aligns with WCC Congress Theme Scaling Up Resilient Conservation Action by technological innovations for species monitoring and strengthening data-driven decision-making for MPA. It also follows key Guiding Principles by integrating scientific technology with multi-stakeholder involvement, empowering early-career researchers, and advancing the Nature-Climate Nexus through satellite tracking and environmental monitoring. Additionally, the showcase exemplifies IUCN’s “One Programme” approach through collaboration among member organizations, commission, and local government agencies to enhance conservation policies.
