Session with interpretation

Session Description

Ecosystem restoration is essential for addressing biodiversity loss, land degradation, and climate change, yet many countries lack the legal frameworks needed to enforce large-scale restoration efforts. This session, hosted by the G20 Global Land Initiative (G20 GLI), UNCCD, SER, and GIZ, will explore how strong legislation can drive effective restoration policies at national and regional levels. With the Model Law Framework on Ecological Restoration under development, this session will highlight how governments can adopt legally binding restoration commitments, drawing lessons from the recently adopted EU Nature Restoration Law.Bringing in parliamentarians from the Global Changemaker Academy for Parliamentarians (GCAP)—a program by G20 GLI and UNSSC—the session will facilitate an interactive discussion between lawmakers, legal experts, and environmental practitioners. Participants will explore key legislative challenges, policy solutions, and governance approaches to ensure restoration commitments translate into real-world environmental impact and sustainable land management strategies.
