Dr. Abdelmenam Mohamed is the Coordinator of the CMS Dugong MoU Secretariat in Abu Dhabi, leading efforts to advance the conservation and sustainable management of dugongs and their seagrass habitats through regional collaboration, science-policy integration, and stakeholder engagement. He is an experienced Programme Manager with over 15 years of expertise in integrating science into environmental policy. He has extensive regional experience and a strong track record in coordinating initiatives and driving transformative change. His work has focused on promoting environmental sustainability and supporting evidence-based decision-making at national and regional levels. As an Environment Specialist with UNDP Libya, he led a government-funded program on environmental governance, addressing key challenges such as water management, protected area management, and environmental monitoring.
In 2015, Abdelmenam joined the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) as the Regional Science-Policy Interface in the Regional Office for West Asia, where he played a key role in delivering the sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6) Regional Assessment for the region. As Regional Development Coordination Officer, he established strategic partnerships with scientific institutions and the private sector, serving as UNEP's focal point for UN system-wide development initiatives in the region.
Abdelmenam holds a doctorate in Natural Sciences from Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany, with a focus on ecosystem management.
