Dhriti BANERJEE

Biography

Dr. Dhriti Banerjee, Director of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), is an accomplished zoologist specializing in taxonomy, systematics, ecology, and molecular biodiversity studies, with additional expertise in forensic entomology, GIS, and climate change biology. A Ph.D. in Zoology (1999) and D.Sc. in Life Science (2024) from the University of Calcutta, she has served ZSI for over three decades, rising from the Diptera section to become its first woman Director in 2021. She has led national projects on faunal digitization, species databases, and DNA barcoding, and has authored more than 190 scientific papers, books, and technical reports. Her research and policy contributions have modernized biodiversity documentation in India and strengthened its alignment with global conservation frameworks.
