Giacomo MONTEREALE GAVAZZI

Biography

Giacomo Montereale Gavazzi is a natural scientist at the European Commission’s Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity (Joint Research Centre), where he leads the development of the EU Monitoring Plan for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and contributes to the conceptualisation and operationalisation of the European subregional Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centre under the Convention on Biological Diversity. His expertise spans marine ecology, seafloor mapping/remote sensing, biodiversity monitoring, and maritime spatial planning, with a strong focus on bridging science and policy. Previously, he was a researcher at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, where he coordinated national marine monitoring programmes and seafloor mapping initiatives; a project manager at CORILA in Venice, leading EU and national projects on maritime spatial planning and stakeholder engagement; and a PhD researcher at Ghent University specialising in seafloor mapping methodologies. With over a decade of professional experience ranging from academic research to science–policy cooperation, he is driven by a commitment to advancing effective biodiversity conservation and governance.
