GUSTAVO SOBRINHO DGEDGE

Biography

Gustavo Sobrinho Dgedge is Secretary of State for Land and Environment at the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries of the Republic of Mozambique. He holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, in 2004, and is an Associate Professor at the Pedagogical University of Maputo. He is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, in addition to the national language Xishangane. A university professor at the Pedagogical University since 1993, he has held various leadership and leadership positions, including Deputy Director of Pedagogy at the Pedagogical University, Gaza Branch, from 2005 to 2012; Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Pedagogical University from 2012 to 2014; Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Pedagogical University of Maputo from 2014 to 2024; Director of the Master's Program in Environmental Risk Management; and Vice-Rector of the Pedagogical University from 2024 to 2025. He is currently Secretary of State for Land and Environment at the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, and Fisheries of the Republic of Mozambique.

With extensive experience in management and teaching, he has taught in the doctoral programs of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at the Pedagogical University of Maputo. He has also taught Master's and Bachelor's programs not only at the Maputo Pedagogical University but also at other universities such as the Apolitécnica Polytechnic University, UniRovuma, UniLicungo, UniPúngue, UniSave, and the Gaza Polytechnic Institute. He was a teaching assistant at the Open University of Lisbon and the University of Coimbra, Portugal.
He conducts research in the areas of environmental risks, environmental impact assessment, natural resource management, and physical geography.
He has published three books and more than 20 peer-reviewed articles nationally and internationally.
He has supervised more than 13 doctoral theses and 25 master's dissertations nationally and internationally, as well as more than 50 scientific monographs at the Bachelor's level.
He directs research projects in the areas of natural risks, environmental management, and water and natural resource management. He was a member of the National Land Policy Review Commission, a member of the Environmental Law Review Commission, a member of the Technical-Scientific Commission on Climate Change, a Focal Point for the Environmental Network of Portuguese-Speaking Countries at the Pedagogical University of Maputo, and a member of the Coordinating and Scientific Team of the Luso-Afro-American Physical Geography Meeting, as well as other international and national committees.
He is an Environmental Consultant and Environmental Auditor certified by the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, and Fisheries, having conducted and supervised more than 30 Environmental Impact Studies throughout the country.
