I am an ecologist with an interdisciplinary background in landscape-level conservation planning and management. I have researched and written about many topics including most recently the impacts of war on Ukraine's protected area estate; the state of forest conservation world-wide; building trust with rangers and communities; how to protect 30% of inland waters by 2030; the threats to, and biodiversity values and ecosystem services of grasslands; engaging civil society in conservation; and many more topics.
I have a specific interest in restoring keystone, charismatic and wide-ranging species to their former ranges. In particular, I have written a lot on the cultural touchstones of wildlife, wild ecosystems and rewilding - what these mean to societies and individuals and how to restore important cultural connections.
