Dr Jean-Christophe Vié is Director General of Fondation Franklinia, a Swiss foundation dedicated to the conservation of globally threatened tree species. He was recruited to develop the foundation in 2018 after 17 years working for the IUCN Secretariat, first in West Africa, and then at its Headquarters as Deputy Director of the Species Programme. He joined the IUCN Species Survival Commission over 3 decades ago and has been part of its Steering Committee since 2001. He is currently its Regional Vice Chair for West Europe.
Jean-Christophe gained field experience in different parts of the world during 15 years at the beginning of his career. He started his career as a wildlife veterinarian and then completed a PhD in ecology. During his career he led a number of initiatives ranging from designing local to international conservation programmes to creating a local NGO, establishing grant-making mechanisms such as SOS – Save Our Species, leading studies on impact of human activities on biodiversity, designing and managing protected areas, working with local and indigenous communities, leading delegation to international policy events or creating public awareness campaigns.
He is a French and Swiss national and is the author of a number of scientific articles and several books including analyses of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
