John EWEN

Biography

Professor John Ewen is a conservation scientist in ZSL’s Institute of Zoology, leading a research group focussed on species recovery including conservation translocations.  He has published more than 150 peer reviewed papers, including a recent review of the status and conservation focus of the world’s Extinct in the Wild species (published in Science, 2023).  His work has accrued more than 6500 citations. He is a member of the IUCN Conservation Translocation Specialist Group, and has co-led on the development of their training courses which have been delivered to conservation practitioners and decision makers for application of the IUCN Guidelines for Reintroductions and Other Conservation Translocations. John is the Co-Chair the IUCN Extinct in the Wild Action Partnership, member of England's Species Reintroduction Taskforce, is the Sihek Recovery Team Chair (USA; Extinct in the Wild species) and Chair of the Hihi Recovery Group in his native New Zealand.
