Dr. Jules Rutebuka is an agri-environmental scientist passionate about sustainable landscape management and environmentally friendly agriculture. For more than sixteen years, he has designed and implemented research and development projects related to soil fertility, erosion control, climate change adaptation, and food security, mainly in Rwanda. His PhD, dedicated to the multi-scale assessment of soil erosion control systems, along with his numerous publications and high-quality reports, demonstrates his strong analytical, coordination, and teamwork skills.
He has developed recognized expertise in applying agroecological approaches and Nature-based Solutions to improve agricultural productivity while protecting biodiversity. His career has led him to work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) and the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), in partnership with international organizations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, CIMMYT, AGRA, ASARECA, the European Union, ICRAF, and FAO. Between 2020 and 2022, he led the establishment of the Rwanda Soil Information Service (RwaSIS), a national hub of land, soil, and crop data. Today, he serves as Regional Programme Officer for Sustainable Agriculture for Eastern and Southern Africa at IUCN, where he continues his commitment to resilient landscapes, sustainable agriculture, and strengthened food security.
