Gonzalo Andrade, for 33 years he has been an Associate Professor at the Institute of Natural Sciences of the National University of Colombia and a full member of the Colombian Academy of Sciences, between 1995 and 2004 he was director of the Institute of Sciences, and since 2018 he serves again as director of the Institute of Natural Sciences, between 2004 and 2005 he was director of Ecosystems of the Ministry of Environment and Vice Minister of Environment in charge, between 2009 and 2012 he was advisor to the Vice-Rector of Research at the National University and Vice-Rector of Research in charge on several occasions, since 2005 he is coordinator of the protected areas committee of the Academy of Sciences, between 2018 and 2019 he formed the Commission of Experts on Fracking of the National Government, Between 2019 and 2020 he was moderator of the environmental table of the Great National Conversation, appointed by the President of the Republic of Colombia. He is a member of the IUCN Colombia EAGLE (Group of Experts on the Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas). From 2016 to 2023, he was the President of the Colombian Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and from June 2025, he is again the President of the IUCN Colombian Committee.
His research contributions focus on the understanding of the biological diversity of Colombia and the Neotropical region, particularly butterflies, which he has studied for 35 years. His areas of interest include taxonomy and systematics of Colombian and Neotropical butterflies, biodiversity, conservation, sustainable use, genetics, biodiversity information systems, protected areas, endangered species, and environmental policy and legislation.
