Session Description

This session explores the role of territories and areas conserved by Indigenous People and local communities (ICCAs - Territories of Life) and community-led documentation in advancing targets set under the KM-GBF, particularly Target 3. It also explores the opportunity to support voluntary reporting of the KM-GBF implementation. Through expert discussions, participants will examine web-based platforms and technology-driven participatory approaches that strengthen conservation efforts and support environmental governance by IPs and LCs.
The session will highlight key initiatives, including national, regional and global ICCA databases such as the CCA India portal and portal by Working Group on ICCAs in Indonesia (WGII), which function as repositories of multidimensional data on ICCAs, and the ICCA Registry, a global repository compiling maps, photographs, and case studies.
These initiatives can amplify grassroots conservation efforts and serve as powerful tools for documenting, preserving and asserting rights and self-determination for Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
