Por qué asistir

This session focuses on incorporating and assessing ecological connectivity as a design criterion for individual sites and networks of marine protected and conserved areas (MPCAs) an essential component for resilient and functional areas that conserve biodiversity (species, ecosystems, genetics), adapt to climate change, sustain human livelihoods, and achieve global goals.

Descripción de la sesión

Connectivity is a fundamental ecological process in marine ecosystems promoting persistence to and recovery from perturbations through the movement of marine life across populations, communities, as well as flows of nutrients and energy. It is a key ingredient for effective and resilient MPCAs. Led by members of the Marine Connectivity Working Group (MCWG) of IUCN’s WCPA Connectivity Conservation Specialist Group, this session builds on MCWG’s Rules of Thumb for MPCA connectivity design and IUCN Connectivity Guidelines, and will inform development of a “Roadmap for Marine Connectivity Conservation to 2030”. The session draws upon latest scientific knowledge and case studies on MPCA connectivity design and management, covering such topics as marine indicators, genetic connectivity, marine-coastal connectivity, migratory connectivity, seascape ecology and connectivity, emerging tracking technologies, and its role in climate adaptation and mitigation, as well as achieving global and regional policy targets and commitments, including high seas biodiversity conservation.
