This session marks the launch of the first flagship projects under the WALD Innovation Facility, an initiative implemented by IUCN and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through KfW Development Bank. The Facility introduces a globally significant model to scale up transformative nature-based restoration and carbon removal projects that deliver biodiversity benefits, strengthen community livelihoods, and advance climate goals. With biodiversity, climate mitigation, livelihoods, and innovation as pillars, it goes beyond business-as-usual to deliver ambitious, science-based and inclusive action. Participants will learn how the Facility enables countries and developers to leverage carbon markets to meet Paris Agreement commitments, Nationally Determined Contributions, and biodiversity targets. The session will also address challenges in the voluntary carbon market and highlight the importance of safeguards, transparency, and high integrity. A call to action will invite private-sector partners, communities, and innovators to close the funding gap for nature-based solutions.
