Why attend
A practical case on how to promote ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) will be shown, offering conceptual bases that can be generalized and applied to other regions. Resilience and NbS indicators that have guided implementation will be presented. The EbA case is improving water availability and access for agricultural producers.
Session Description
A case study (Resilient Highlands Project) shows a successful ecosystem-based adaptation strategy implemented in Guatemala. Water shortages during dry season and risks of landslides and flooding in the rainy season were the addressed problems. As solution, the restoration of ecosystems (focus on territorial vulnerability), training of communities (social vulnerability) and provision of climate information (knowledge of threats) were implemented. Indicators estimated with InVest show that potential erosion and runoff have been reduced, showing positive impact on provision of ecosystem services. The implementation of the UICN self-assessment tool on NbS standard shows that the approach is successful in providing solutions that increase resilience. The methodology consisted on following steps: definition of targeted ecosystem service, analysis of the opportunities of restoration for provision of such service, local organization for watershed management, implementing practices at the plot level (keyline practices), and monitoring using IUCN NbS Standard and InVest indicators.
