As IDAs grow in numbers, site managers, management authorities and State Parties require support to effectively manage areas where multiple international designations overlap (MIDAs). This session explores issues, solutions, good practices for managing MIDAs, drawing on IUCN World Heritage Outlook 4, the draft Managing MIDAs 2 guidance and Jeju's experience.
Session Description
Internationally Designated Areas (IDAs), including World Heritage Sites, UNESCO Global Geoparks, UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, Ramsar Wetland Sites, and Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), are important to advance global conservation. While MIDAs share the overall goal of conservation, each instrument has distinct purposes, profiles and management requirements. This session will address the need for integrated, coordinated management of MIDAs, ensuring effective conservation, sustainable ecosystem use, and positive outcomes for communities. It will explore key governance challenges and solutions, informed by IUCN World Heritage Outlook 4, the draft Managing MIDAs 2 guidance and the pioneering experience of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. Jeju is also home to GCIDA, a UNESCO Category 2 Centre dedicated to research and training on the management of internationally designated areas. GCIDA will present its future vision and strategies for advancing MIDA management on a global scale.Speaker
