Why attend

Better safeguards – better conservation? Conservation funding is increasingly tied to safeguards application, from the project development stage and throughout implementation. This event provides space to exchange on impacts and challenges of safeguards implementation in conservation and if and how safeguards contribute to measurable benefit for people and nature.

Session Description

As a practice, safeguards in conservation are still in the relatively early stages of development and application across conservation programmes. Communication and exchange about common challenges as well as the impacts of the use of safeguards in conservation is thus limited. Following a brief introduction, the session will break into groups to explore the following questions:
1. How have conservation outcomes been improved through the application of social safeguards?
2. What unintended consequences have there been from the application of social safeguards?
3. What is the role of safeguards in complex conservation contexts and what can be improved?
4. How do we measure the effectiveness and social impact of social safeguards and actively adapt over the long-term?
