Why attend

The session will highlight enablers and practical solutions for ecotourism and nature-positive tourism with a focus on the new conservation areas and nature reserves in the Middle East.

Session Description

This session will examine the critical enablers for ecotourism and nature-positive tourism in conservation areas, in light of the global push to expand protected areas (PAs) under the KMGBF's 30x30 target. The development of ecotourism in new PAs brings complex challenges that demand robust governance, strategic planning, and alignment with global standards such as the IUCN Green List.

Focusing on the Middle East, the session will highlight key enablers for balancing conservation goals with tourism development. Topics will include governance frameworks, intersectoral cooperation, carrying capacity models, waste and visitor management, investment principles, training and awareness, and sustainable funding mechanisms.

Drawing from their on-the-ground experience in conservation and ecotourism in the region, Roland Berger, the WCPA TAPAS Group, and the King Abdulaziz Royal Nature Reserve (KARNR) will lead this action-oriented dialogue. The session aims to provide practical insights and recommendations for advancing ecotourism that supports both conservation and local economic development.
