Session Description

The world today is getting dangerously close to a climate overshoot. 2024 was the warmest year on record globally, and the first calendar year that the average global temperature exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. While greenhouse gas emissions need to be cut 43% by 2030, and 60% by 2035, compared to 2019 levels, current climate plans cut emissions by only 2.6% by 2030. This session will set the scene on the range of climate solutions that are available today, from those based on nature to those centred on technology, and those that are still beyond the horizon, such as geoengineering. Senior leaders from the worlds of government, business, science and civil society will weigh the pros and cons of each, and debate what the right balance should be. The plenary will also reflect on the upcoming UNFCCC COP30 in Belém, and what it can deliver for climate, people and nature.
