Session Description
At COP15 in 2022, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), marking a historic step in global conservation. The Framework explicitly acknowledges Indigenous Peoples and local communities in its text, particularly in Sections C and eight key targets, recognizing their rights, knowledge, and contributions to safeguarding biodiversity. This reflects progress in aligning Article 8(j) with the recognition of Indigenous stewardship of the world’s most biodiverse regions. The International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) plays a central role as a platform where Indigenous Peoples from seven socio-cultural regions coordinate strategies to ensure their full participation in CBD processes. Through inclusive dialogue and consensus building, the IIFB works to protect rights, strengthen recognition, and empower Indigenous communities as essential actors in biodiversity governance.
