Why attend

Find out how media can shift perceptions of informal waste pickers in Bengaluru, India, and the vital work they do for nature and the environment.

Session Description

Across the world, waste pickers play a vital yet overlooked role in conservation and circular economy. In Bengaluru, India's Silicon Valley, BBC Media Action’s Invaluable campaign brought visibility and dignity to the ’saviours of nature’ who recycle 383 million kilos of solid waste every year, diverting it from landfills. Soma Katiyar, Executive Creative Director, BBC Media Action, shares how reframing waste pickers as climate heroes has challenged discrimination, shifted perception, and inspired a model of inclusive conservation.
