Why attend

Discover how the IUCN Urban Nature Indexes (UNI) guides waterway restoration and planning—from riparian zones to wetlands—in Asian cities. Gain practical tools for linking ecosystem health, social benefits, and inclusive governance to build resilient, sustainable, and equitable cities.

Session Description

This launch introduces Renewing Urban Waterways, a flagship initiative by UBHub, IUCN, and UN-Habitat responding to the urgent need for resilient, inclusive restoration of rivers and water bodies across Asian cities. It applies the IUCN Urban Nature Indexes (UNI) to guide citywide strategies on water quality, flood resilience, and ecosystem health, combining targeted NbS with integrated planning and governance reform. The event will showcase evidence-based approaches—from riparian rehabilitation to community stewardship that democratises ownership and knowledge—while enabling science-based resilience to emerging climate risks such as flooding and urban heat. By linking ecological restoration with social equity and adaptive planning, the initiative addresses a critical gap in urban waterway management, offering scalable models and positioning IUCN at the forefront of transformative urban waterway restoration.
