Session Description
Tiger conservation cannot succeed without the leadership and knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IP&LCs) who have long stewarded tiger landscapes. This session, organised by IUCN’s Integrated Tiger Habitat Conservation Programme (ITHCP), highlights how rights-based and inclusive approaches empower communities to conserve tigers while sustaining cultural and ecological values.Through storytelling and dialogue, representatives from Nepal, India, and Indonesia will share lived experiences of leadership in tiger conservation ranging from managing homestays in the Terai Arc Landscape, to community-based monitoring in Nagaland, to safeguards for inclusive conservation in Indonesia. Keynotes from IUCN and KfW will frame these perspectives within global priorities on equity, governance, and biodiversity recovery.
Participants will explore enabling conditions for IP&LC leadership, from secure rights to policy influence, and identify opportunities to scale up community-driven models. The session fosters collaboration across communities, practitioners, donors, and policymakers for just and effective conservation outcomes.
