Why attend

The Panel explore what role collective, cross sectoral landscape planning approaches can play at all levels to reduce human-wildlife conflict – from village to national, to transboundary and beyond augmented by innovative tools at the site level.

Session Description

Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) is increasing across many parts of the continent. In areas where wildlife is flourishing, people are suffering the impacts and, likewise, where human densities are increasing and land is being converted, wildlife has no place to go. Site-level HWC interventions are designed to treat the symptoms and not to tackle the root causes of HWC – a much thornier issue are the deeper causes driving HWC.

The Panel will explore the role of rapidly growing land transformation resulting from human population growth, agricultural expansion, infrastructure developments, climate change impacts, and alien invasive species, as well as the need for local voices and agency to be built into plans and processes going forward. The Panel will also explore what role collective, cross sectoral landscape planning approaches can play at all levels – from village to national, to transboundary and beyond augmented by innovative tools at the site level.
