Session Description
On September 23, 2025, a historic milestone was reached with the 60th ratification of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, triggering its entry into force in early 2026. With 35 African states among the 140 signatories and twelve already having ratified, Africa is at a critical juncture.This session will delve into the transition from ratification to implementation, examining the unique opportunities and potential threats this landmark agreement presents for African nations. A distinguished panel, including African experts, government representatives, a co-chair of the High Ambition Coalition, and key partners, will unpack crucial questions. Discussions will focus on the partnerships and support available to African countries, how to ensure the agreement is implemented equitably, and how it will deliver on the original promises of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
