Philippe Mayaux

Biography

With a background in forest sciences (up to PhD level), I have dedicated 37 years of my career to the study and management of African forest ecosystems, including 30 years working for the European Union. My work has spanned a wide range of areas, from scientific research (forest mapping, deforestation assessment, forest and biodiversity monitoring and alert systems) to development policy and field operations, particularly in Senegal and Cameroon.

Together with colleagues, I have contributed to the launch of several key initiatives such as BIOPAMA, NaturAfrica, OFAC, the Sustainable Wildlife Management Programme, and the Biodiversity Centres of Excellence. These programmes have had a significant impact on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development across the African continent.
