Steven DICKINSON

Biography

Steven Dickinson is the corporate Biodiversity Expert of TotalEnergies, a broad energy company present in 130 countries and with 108,000 staff. He oversees the company’s biodiversity programme, including policy, rules, tools & partnerships development. He is also directly involved for staff training and awareness raising on biodiversity matters. Steven has a technical advisory role, across the company’s value chain, for biodiversity impact assessment and management with a focus on high sensitivity projects, notably those aligned with World bank and International Finance Corporation standards. In 2018 he spearheaded the company’s adhesion to the “Act4Nature” initiative which resulted in a new set of CEO lead public biodiversity commitments. In 2020 he led at EXCOM level the Group's 2020-2025 Biodiversity Ambition, as a contribution to the UN CBD’s post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). He is the company representative at the O&G sector association IPIECA’s Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services work group as its chair. In 2021, Steven was nominated by IPBES to assist with the scoping of a methodological assessment of business and biodiversity, and subsequently in 2023 as a lead author on the assessment. He has been actively engaged with the UN Convention on Biodiversity (UN CBD) as the sector representative for the CBD’s Informal Advisory Group on Mainstreaming of Biodiversity, as part of the 2021 COP 15 preparation process. He is also in charge of developing TotalEnergies’ biodiversity partnerships and cooperation, namely with the UNE-WCMC, the IUCN - International Union for the Conservation of Nature – conservation NGOs. Steven is the focal point for several biodiversity fora & think-tanks, such as CBD’s Global Business & Biodiversity Partnership, the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management and its Impact Mitigation and Ecological Compensation expert group (IMEC), the French Standard Agency AFNOR (NFX 31-100 Biodiversity Standard for Organisations) the EU B@B platform, the Natural Capital Coalition and the Task Force for Nature Disclosure (TNFD).

Steven holds a Master’s of Science in Aquatic Resources Management, King's College London and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology. He’s worked in the environment and biodiversity fields for over 20 years, throughout Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific regions. His previous main positions were those of Environment manager and Biodiversity adviser for several IFC aligned world class mining and hydrometallurgical projects located in African and south-eastern Asian high biodiversity hotspots He has also worked extensively in the European manufacturing sector and also in nature conservation.
