Thomas Brooks serves as IUCN Chief Scientist. He holds a B.A. (Hons) in Geography from the University of Cambridge (1993) and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Tennessee (1998). He has extensive professional experience in biodiversity conservation, having previously worked with The Nature Conservancy (1998–1999), Conservation International (1999–2010), and NatureServe (2010–2012). He holds visiting positions at ICRAF-the World Agroforestry Center in the University of the Philippines Los Baños, and the Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies of the University of Tasmania (Australia). He is an ornithologist by training, with extensive field experience in tropical forests of Asia, South America and Africa. His specific interests lie in threatened species conservation (especially of birds) and in biodiversity hotspots (especially in tropical forests). More generally, his work seeks sustainability of humanity on Earth, and he has published on topics spanning international policy, ecosystem services, climate change, and freshwater and marine conservation. He has authored 320 scientific and popular articles, including 180 indexed in the ISI ‘Web of Science’.
