Por qué asistir

This session will explore the outcomes and expectations regarding IUCN’s participation in the three Advisory Opinions proceedings: before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR). All of them led by WCEL.

Descripción de la sesión

The session will present insights from the lead experts behind IUCN’s historic contribution to the advisory opinions before the ICJ, ITLOS and IACtHR: Grethel Aguilar, Christina Voigt, Francesco Sindico, Cymie Payne, Claudia de Windt, and Marina Venancio. In an advisory process, an international court is asked to answer a question of international law. States and international organisations can provide relevant information to shape the court's opinion. IUCN participated recently in three proceedings concerning questions about the climate change obligations of States. IUCN played an important and distinct role in these proceedings by providing scientifically and legally sound input. As an organisation with 1,400 State and non-State members, and its Commissions and bodies encompassing some 17,000 experts with expertise on a range of topics related to climate and biodiversity, it was well suited to provide relevant input and marked itself as an important voice in these processes.
